My Friend Ed has COVID

I’m going to talk about a friend of mine: my mentor, Ed.

Ed is 79. It was his birthday last week.
It was also the week he ventured out of his Arizona home, with double mask, for his CV vaccine appointment. He’s very careful because of his age and so-so health, so he takes all recommended precautions.

This week, Ed told me he has Covid. He described all of the symptoms and confessed to having absolutely no idea how he could have contracted it.

I immediately felt grief – and fear – of the possibility of losing my friend and mentor. But there was another thought that arose. If he got it with all the precautions he took, I have to re-examine my own ideas of the disease. Not just how to evade it, but re-evaluate my attitude to a new world where something indiscriminately chooses its victims. Rich, poor, outside worker, inside worker, health carer, garbage collector. Covid doesn’t care.

It’s been hard to keep out of the conspiracy circles surrounding CV. It seems that every day there’s a new ‘expert’ telling us it’s a plot by the Illuminati to rid the world of good people – or some alternative version of this theme. I have made a conscious choice not to watch the ‘must-see’ video on Facebook or YouTube. Frankly, I’m holding steady in my own mind and can’t see how any more theories would help my mental state.

But
Ed’s announcement winded me. Someone so close. Someone I admired so much. It felt, for the first time, personal.

And it made me revisit this idea I have held onto for most of my life that somehow calamities only happen to other people. Ed today? Me tomorrow. So what can I do about it NOW?

One word arose: IMMUNITY.
Followed closely by another: INFLAMMATION.

It seems to me that people aren’t really talking about immunity. They are talking about masks, and social distancing, but not actual immunity. Perhaps it’s too hard for people to grasp. But given the appalling state of Western nations’ basic health, I think it’s a particularly focused question. How is it, we’ve all wondered, that in a room with an influenza victim, some people catch it, and some don’t?

Immunity.

Of course there are levels of immunity. I’m lucky. I credit the health choices I’ve made over the last 21 years to the fact that in that time I’ve never had a cold or flu. Same with Cassie, my beloved.

But why, for instance, is the infection rate so high in America? Yes, we know there may be political reasons, but it seems to me that immunity – or lack thereof – must also be accounted for.

Metabolic Syndrome

Among US adults aged 18 years or older, the prevalence of metabolic syndrome rose by more than 35% from 1988–1994 to 2007–2012, increasing from 25.3% to 34.2%.
Metabolic syndrome prevalence increased from 1988 to 2012 for every sociodemographic group; by 2012, more than a third of all US adults met the definition and criteria for metabolic syndrome agreed to jointly by several international organizations.
(CDC)

So exactly what is Metabolic Syndrome?

“Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of biological factors characterized by abdominal obesity, dyslipidemia, hypertension, and type 2 diabetes mellitus (1). The link between metabolic syndrome and increased risk of multiple chronic diseases (eg, cardiovascular disease, arthritis, chronic kidney disease, schizophrenia, several types of cancer) and of early death have been reported for many decades.”

When I read those statistics it seemed to point to a simple conclusion about the high infection rate for Americans. Lump obesity, stress, CV problems, arthritis, and cancer into one and what do we have as the predominant health condition in America? Metabolic syndrome.

The bottom line of all of these conditions is lack of immunity. Your body is doing its best with one hand tied behind its back.

And when or if we contract CV?

What does a healthy body do? It fights with both hands. What does a metabolic syndrome body do? That’s a good question. Like my friend Ed, if it’s overweight, then it’s already inflamed every day of its life. So it’s not only fighting with one hand behind its back, it’s trying to fight in a soup of inflammation fuzziness. Inflammation affects an estimated 60 million Americans.

Immunity

or the ability to increase our immunity isn’t difficult. There are many supplements and diets that can help. I can only share what has been shown to work for myself and Cassie. I continually re-examine my diet to maintain a healthy alkaline reserve. I have cut out all grains, all sugar and virtually all carbs. All of them rob me of my alkaline reserves and as a result, increase the general acidity of my metabolism. And acidity – as we know – creates inflammation.

And.. inflammation responds by creating its own acidity. Yes, I drink alkaline water, and take alkaline electrolytes But that’s just the maintenance part of my strategy. It’s just filling up my alkaline reserves. My alkaline buffer or alkaline minerals like calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium are essential not just for their unique and specific health capabilities, but also just the ‘be there’ when acidity arrives in the form of stress, environment, excess of certain foods or drinks.. All creating an acid tide in our bodies.

Picture this:

I have contracted CV. I have made it to the hospital. I need a ventilator to breathe. My airways are extremely inflamed.
But my inflammation flares so dramatically that

I’m not going to preach to you about this.
It’s my truth and you are welcome to criticise it on the basis of limited sample, science or awareness. But it’s true for me and that’s why I’m offering it today.

In my mind, the cascade is there.

Acidity > Inflammation > Metabolic Syndrome > Low Immunity > Big Problem.

I’m lucky. I learned this 21 years ago and I have practised it: not by any means perfectly – but at age 74 I look at my old surfing buddies still on the acid treadmill – and it’s not a pretty sight.

I’m hoping for goods news about Ed.
He has been someone SO important in my life. But if the worst comes, I have to remember that it need not be that way. It’s up to me.

I think that the pandemic has shown us all that we can’t depend on a good tomorrow as a ‘given’. It has shown me that I have to take the leap from passive health to active, proactive and reactive health. What I put in my mouth does matter. How I live on a daily basis does matter. Observing my bad habits and changing them is no longer a life choice. Now it’s a choice for life itself!

Spiritualism, faith and also math in the Victorian duration

Late nineteenth-century British society was somewhat busied with the existence of ghosts. Invoking spirits at séances was a preferred activity, with the ventures of some fortune-tellers, such as the tool Henry Slade, the fodder of press gossip and celebrity. Communicating with spirits became of deep rate of interest to some researchers, consisting of the physicist William Crookes and the naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace, who disputed their peers about aberrant physical phenomena and whether specific observations validated the reality of spirits or not.

Speaking boards, likewise referred to as Ouija boards, automated writing, knot-tying, levitation and other experiments made to prove the disturbance of spirits with the real world, flourished in Britain at the end of the century. A number of advocates of the new Fortune-teller motion utilized theoretical proof from nineteenth-century geometry to both justify the reality of their otherworldly explorations as well as to develop approaches with which to participate in transcendent worlds.
The mathematical globe was transformed in 1832 upon uncovering that Euclidean geometry, that classic description of space, in which triangulars have 180 levels and parallel lines reach infinity, was only one feasible description of three-dimensional space. As it ended up several other geometries were feasible. In hyperbolic geometry, the angles of a triangle overall less than 180 levels, and parallel lines deviate at infinity. In elliptic geometry, the angles of a triangle add to greater than 180 levels and all lines intersect. These were several of the nineteenth-century explorations that essentially altered maths, bringing about a new modernist strategy to the discipline.

The discovery of numerous geometries was one of the ideas that result in an essential re-think regarding how room itself can be specified mathematically. In 1854 German mathematician Bernhard Riemann generalized the concept of spatial measurement in his work Ueber die Hypothesen welche der Geometrie zu Grunde liegen. Riemann’s new mathematical interpretation of measurement opened many more opportunities for the description of room, consisting of the opportunity of multidimensional geometries; mathematical descriptions of room greater than three measurements.

From the mid-century onwards, multidimensional geometry and non-Euclidean geometry were disputed, as well as their ramifications upon human experience became of preferred interest. Mathematically specified, yet basically abstract, geometric spaces left plenty of room for mystical or spiritual followers to add brand-new definitions to these concepts. In 1880 the mathematics educator Charles Howard Hinton published an article qualified “What is the Fourth Dimension?” in which he described an approach for imagining and also engaging with the heavenly world specified for him by the mathematical fourth dimension. Exploring this world held a certain ethical passion for Hinton, that chose the psychological self-control that envisioning the fourth dimension would demand.

Hinton developed a technique of visualization that included a psychological tool he called the tesseract. Imagine a dice subdivided into several smaller sized dices, each coded by either a colour or a number. Through a visualization exercise, the “shadows” of four-dimensional objects could be observed as their intersections were imagined to go through the tesseract. By doing this, higher room could be viewed, if incompletely. Hinton additionally increased his fourth-dimensional conjectures in numerous science fiction publications including Scientific Romances (1884-1886) and An Episode on Flatland (1907 ).
The German physicist Karl Zöllner likewise discovered the link between four-dimensional space as well as Spiritualism in several books toward the century’s end. In Transcendental Physics (1878) Zöllner explains séance experiments in which coins are unaccountably moved outside of sealed boxes. If the spiritual dimension overlaps with our own, then could spirits relocate items in our measurement, at their will? Zöllner made use of the geometric job of Riemann and also Karl Gauss to give an academic and clinical reason for his Fortune-teller belief that equally as mathematical objects in the fourth dimension can penetrate the third dimension, spirits can go through our space from their mystical area when they will.

In 1884 the English schoolteacher Edwin Abbott published Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions. This book, a social witticism, likewise checks out the mathematical principle of dimensionality. Abbott’s personalities visualize what it could be like for animals of one dimension to connect with creatures of greater or lower measurements. A significant motif is just how differently dimensional animals could view as well as believe in animals of at the same time dimensional globes. Abbott’s book can be checked out as a discourse on science and faith in the Victorian duration, as his personalities are conflicted in between their desire to believe and their want of extensive intellectual explanation, as well as material evidence for their idea. Flatland explains a territory acquainted to nineteenth-century British culture, in which the project of integrating their spirituality with the assimilation of modern scientific (and also mathematical) concept into one holistic worldview was an ongoing as well as common issue.

Revelatory Evolution and Cosmological Development Tales

When you sit down to watch a scientific research documentary you’re most likely anticipating to discover something regarding science. You may even be wanting to pick up a couple of facts to thrill your associates at the office or your buddies at the bar. Nonetheless, together with these nuggets of expertise, a science program will additionally provide a photo of scientific research. This image is an item of the way science is discussed in the show and also suggests something a lot more basic regarding how scientific knowledge is generated as well as the standing or high quality of this knowledge. My research study has actually focused on these pictures or representations of science in non-fiction programmes, as well as I suggest that in some programmes scientific research exists in a manner which makes it appear like a religious beliefs.

Like our understanding of many things, our understanding of scientific research and also researchers is shaped to some degree incidentally they are stood for in electronic media. The substantial majority of people aren’t researchers, and after they leave school, the majority of their expertise and understanding of scientific research is shaped by these media depictions. Exactly how science is stood for in non-fiction programs is specifically crucial because customers come close to these programmes believing (extra so than when enjoying a fictional programme) that what they are seeing is a true-to-life photo of scientific research. Put simply, you’re most likely to take the depiction of scientific research in an episode of the BBC docudrama hair Horizon much more seriously than the science provided in Star Trek. Nevertheless, non-fiction programmes can only ever before give a partial depiction of science. A documentary can never inform the entire reality– it needs to embrace a viewpoint on reality, and also condense that unpleasant fact right into a cool hour-length programme. This suggests that it is really important to recognize the elements of science which non-fiction programmes select to focus on.

The image of science a program provides is an item of just how scientific research is spoken about in the program, what is aesthetically presented together with this talk, and what other audios (music, unique effects and so on) are heard. In mix, these 3 components can create extremely different impressions of scientific research. In programs broadcast on the exact same network, also the same channel, the different means the talk, visual as well as soundtrack aspects are combined can lead to entirely contrasting representations of scientific research. In the two programs I analysed, Bang! Goes the Concept and also Wonders of Life, both very first broadcast on the BBC in 2013, I discovered that Bang provided an extremely nonreligious photo of scientific research whilst Marvels presented scientific research more like a religion.

Representing science like a religion includes associating particular characteristics to science as well as scientific knowledge. In Wonders scientific knowledge exists as certain. There is little to no suggestion that scientific understandings might be incorrect, insufficient or will be altered or adapted over-time. In this way scientific research is made to seem dogmatic– a core of ideas are set-in-stone, immutable or imperishable. This core of beliefs creates the product out of which a definitive production narrative (typically including the big-bang and evolution) is built. This production story is full and comprehensive, moving initially of time to the here and now day. No alternative scientific theories are mentioned. Notably, this development narrative situates humanity at the peak of development; our awareness, and the scientific knowledge we have actually produced with our mindful minds, indicates we are the most considerable point in the universe.

The method this story is told in Wonders, via an engaging script, epic visuals, and a stimulating soundtrack, increases its effect. Aesthetic sequences offered alongside the voiceover explaining the clinical development story show the tale. The birth of deep space is revealed using sensational computer-generated images, interspersed with images of wild animals in all its varied forms, aesthetically attaching living things in a grand tale of production. The emotional influence of this tale, its power to develop moments of transcendence in its audience, which supply a feeling of meaning, is increased via using mentally powerful songs– orchestral as well as choral scores that swell and also surge as the tale is told. This contrasts straight with the secular depiction of scientific research, such as illustrated in Bang where scientific knowledge is revealed to be incomplete, provisional and also open to alter as well as alteration, and there is no reference of an overarching development story.

In this clip Liz Bonin sees the London Chest Medical facility to go over advancements in making use of stem cells to treat cardiovascular disease. Scientific knowledge is revealed to be constantly creating, yet additionally naturally unpredictable. Hi-tech equipment made use of by proficient specialists is shown to be called for when executing clinical procedures.

Just how scientific knowledge is revealed to be created likewise specifies a depiction as nonreligious or spiritual. When stood for like a religious beliefs, scientific knowledge is represented as produced easily by anyone, with very little skill or experience called for. Just the wish to understand, and also a few items of house-hold tools, can reveal essential facts concerning the universe. Instead of being the product of knowledgeable job, completed by members of expert areas, that bargain and define the fact of their speculative overcome social processes (as in the secular representation), scientific knowledge is revealed merely as well as quickly by a certified environment when presented like a religion.

Sacred Space in the Abrahamic Religious beliefs

In a 1967 lecture, Michel Foucault famously said that whereas the 19th century had been controlled by a focus on history and time, today period was noted by a look to space: “we are in the epoch of concurrence: we are in the epoch of association, the epoch of the far and wide, of the side-by-side, of the dispersed” [” Of Various other Rooms,” Diacritics 16:1 (1986)] Throughout Hilary and Trinity 2019, the Abrahamic Seminar assembled both far and wide, in Oxford as well as Be’er Sheva, Israel, taking a look at the theme of “spiritual space in the Abrahamic religions.” The meetings at once attended to a few of the questions signalled by Foucault and showed that such a fixation with area is far from a solely 20th century sensation.

Assembled by Professor Anna Sapir Abulafia and Dr Martin Whittingham, the Abrahamic Seminar began with weekly Hilary lectures as well as discussions, led by both Oxford academics as well as visitor audio speakers. The presentation subjects ranged from the spatial images in Augustine’s believed to a financial analysis of the intersecting class structure of Muslim shrines in Pakistan. This variety was mirrored by the research study interests of the taking part DPhil and Master’s students, that came from departments extending Faith and also Religious beliefs, Background, English, Classics and also the Oriental Institute. Examining the multiple levels on which room functions– from the embodied to the visualized– the team examined what it truly indicates to share room; from inter-religious circumstances of area centers offering different gendered groups, to the intra-religious “competitive sharing” of opposed sacred websites.

In Trinity term, the team took a trip to Be’er Sheva to join a workshop with the Center for the Study of Conversion and also Inter-Religious Encounters at Ben Gurion College of the Negev. Across 2 complete days, the DPhil trainees from Oxford provided presentations alongside fellows of the Facility, in which numerous usual strings developed. A rich interdisciplinary online forum, the workshop raised questions on subjects such as the function of time within sacred space, and just how viewpoint both problems and also curtails what might be seen of a given area. Such discussions of the notion of point of view, as well as a number of discussions exploring spiritual encounters with specific spiritual websites in Jerusalem, additionally guaranteed that the workshop prepared the team for the wrapping up occasion, a day see to Jerusalem led by Teacher Jackie Feldman, a scholar of expedition as well as tourism.

Foucault’s summary of the contemporary spatial awareness concerning associations of the “far and wide” and also “alongside” might well be taken part in analysis of the fantastic gulfs in between geographically proximate sites in Jerusalem, as well as the distinctive courses mapped throughout it by varied religious communities. Our experiences in Jerusalem were not limited to the horizontal measurement however, yet also invited awareness of the profound verticality of the city, from the historical overlaying of different spiritual sites, to the looming height of the Temple Mount and also the multiple domes and spires dotting the landscape. The day in Jerusalem animated most of the concerns that had taken shape throughout our discussions across the coming before days and also months, not the very least how the multi-dimensionality of spiritual area is something created by human bodies, behaviors as well as creative imaginations in time.
